Problems and pitfalls in pitch estimation of infant cries and voice signals

چکیده

Accurate frequency determination is an usual task in many scientific fields including medical physiological measurements like EEG, ECG and also the determination of the fundamental frequency in acoustical signals. Beyond the pure computational problem the difficulties are connected with ambiguities in the definition of frequency. In the strongest mathematical sense frequency is only defined in exact periodical signals. Unfortunately, most realistic signals are instationary signals which contain no exact periodicities. A certain reasonable degree of idealisation and/or approximation is necessary to reconcile a strong periodicity definition with fast time-varying features of a voice signal. In all these cases the applied frequency determination algorithm defines a special notion of frequency and the resulting frequencies or melodies can be remarkably different. Different signal representations (time-, spectral-, lag-domain, complex demodulation, timefrequency representations) have its characteristic approaches for frequency determination and its specific error sources. Some typical examples are illustrated and discussed. In the time domain there are three main approaches for frequency determination algorithms: The model approach, the correlation approach, and the feature analysis approach. The most common approach is to define a model of one period (with time dependent parameters) and than to fit this model to the data. Examples are the fit of exponentially decreasing or increasing signals. Other well-known approaches contain as models harmonic sets of signals as for example Fourier-analysis etc. A consequent extension of this approach is wavelet-analysis which has simply some more free parameters and uses a band-filtering scheme to generate spectrograms. All these approaches need elementary models/structures ( for example mother wavelets) to be identified in the given signal. The more specific the models the more are the resulting melodies depending from the models. All the well-known problems of parameter identification are also present in frequency determination. The model based approaches are well-suited for longer signals with many repetitions of changing resp. instationary periods. Some typical examples of frequency determination using models and parameter identification are discussed.

Sex stereotypes influence adults' perception of babies' cries.

BACKGROUND Despite widespread evidence that gender stereotypes influence human parental behavior, their potential effects on adults' perception of babies' cries have been overlooked. In particular, whether adult listeners overgeneralize the sex dimorphism that characterizes the voice of adult speakers (men are lower-pitched than women) to their perception of babies' cries has not been investiga...

Parent and Nonparent Perception of the Multimodal Infant Cry

This study examined whether perceivers can detect infant distress in the visual and acoustic signals within the cry. Parent and nonparent perceivers rated distress in 3-, 6-, 8-, and 12-month-old infants’ cries that were manipulated to separate facial, vocal, and bodily action. Mean perceiver ratings differed for highand low-distress cries at each infant age on the basis of facial and vocal act...

Analysis of Cry in New Born Infants

The acoustic analysis of infant cry is used to deduce information on the state of health of new-born babies as well as of children a few weeks old. Crying is the first tool of communication for an infant. These cries seem to be uniform, but there are a lot of differences between two infant‟s cries. Infant cry characteristics reflect the development and possibly the integrity of the central nerv...

The effectiveness of massage therapy in the treatment of infantile colic symptoms: A randomized controlled trial

Background: Infantile colic, cry-fuss and sleep problems are transient in the initial months of life, but they contribute to maternal depression, parenting stress and family mental health problems. In this randomized clinical trial, we aimed to explore the efficacy of massage therapy compared to rocking in reducing infantile colic symptoms including duration and number of cries, sleep duration ...

EFFECT OF A UDITORY-VERBAL REHABILITATION ON VOICE PARAMETERS IN CHILD COCHLEAR IMPLANT USERS

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of auditory-verbal rehabilitation on voice parameters after implantation with cochlear implants 2 and 5 months after rehabilitation and compare them with normal voice children (under 12 years of age). A perceptive and electroacoustic evaluation of voice was carried out through a digital analysis after implantation and rehabilitation. The study was pe...
